Competitive Advantage of Information Architecture

Your company runs on information to a large degree. But not all of it is accessible to the people who need to make decisions which slows things down, making you less competitive.

Seth Earley is the CEO of Earley Information Science. We had a conversation about using artificial intelligence to make information flow faster within companies. The key concept was the use of ontologies in the information architecture.

You may be familiar with taxonomies, how we name categories of information. Ontologies takes that one step further to produce a web of relationships. That web helps you slice the information or data in many ways to help you navigate to answers or information you are looking for.

In some ways it’s like a highway map. Or better yet the maps on your phone. You can ask, how do I get from San Francisco to San Jose? But you can also ask for restaurants in San Jose. “Oh, here’s an Indian restaurant that looks interesting. I wonder what other Indian attractions might be nearby.” And so on.

Seth describes examples of how ontologies help with speed to market and make it difficult for competitors to ever catch up.
